Media

Beyond sharing new results with other scientists via presentations and publications, we’re always looking for new ways to communicate with our local community and broader public. Here are some recent examples:

Marian University Magazine

Our lab at Marian was featured in the winter 21-22 edition of the Marian University Alumni Magazine, which you can read online here.

“A Story of Salamanders and Sex”

This video was commissioned by NPR’s Science Friday and created by the extremely talented Katie Garrett. Katie visited our lab here at Morris and my fiend and colleague Katy Greenwald at Eastern Michigan University to present the breadth of research that is happening on these incredible salamanders. From genomics to field experiments to up-close-and-personal footage of salamanders, this video makes for a great introduction to this part of our research program.

“The Secret Sex Lives of Animals”

This short animation was created by Blue Aster Studio as a part of my NSF Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant. It combined the input from multiple scientists who study the wide diversity of reproductive modes across animal life into a fun cartoon that could be used to introduce the topic in classrooms. The designs for each species and additional infographics are available here for education uses.

The Molecular Ecologist

I’ve been a contributor to The Molecular Ecologist, a blog that highlights new research in evolution and ecology, since 2015. While I currently contribute much less than in the past (unfortunately), I’ve written nearly 100 posts than can be seen here. My favorite series is called “How Molecular Ecologists Work”, interviews with scientists across the world on how they go about doing their wonderful science.
